Taiwan Traditional Theatre Center, Performing arts center in Shilin District, Taiwan
The Taiwan Traditional Theatre Center is a performing arts facility in Shilin District, Taipei, with a main theater, an experimental theater, and exhibition spaces. The grounds also include a music institute and several outdoor areas that can be used for performances and events.
The center was completed in 2015 and opened in 2016 as the result of a government-backed project to support traditional Taiwanese performing arts. It was built at a time when there was growing awareness that art forms passed down through direct teaching were at risk of fading.
The center focuses entirely on traditional Taiwanese performing arts, including Peking opera, glove puppetry, and gezai opera. Walking through the building, visitors can come across rehearsal rooms where students are still learning these old techniques today.
The center is within walking distance of Zhishan Station on the red metro line and is easy to reach. The outdoor areas of the grounds are freely accessible, while attending performances inside the halls generally requires a reservation in advance.
The building was designed around an architectural concept drawn from traditional Taiwanese stage layout: one table and two chairs. This simple arrangement, which has been at the core of many performances for centuries, shaped the spatial organization of the whole building.
