Yingma Temple

Yingma Temple, Taoist temple in Wanhua District, Taipei, Taiwan.

Yingma Temple is a Taoist temple in Wanhua District, Taipei. The building displays elaborate decorative elements, dragon carvings on its surfaces, and multiple altar sections devoted to different Chinese deities.

The temple was founded in 1738 by Fujian immigrants during the Qing Dynasty. After natural disasters and fires, it underwent major reconstruction between 1919 and 1924.

The temple blends Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian traditions together. You can observe worshippers presenting offerings at the altars dedicated to Mazu, Guanyin, and Guan Yu throughout the year.

The temple is accessible by Taipei Metro, and the surrounding neighborhood has many food vendors and market stalls. Visiting in the early morning or off-peak hours works well for a quieter experience.

During World War II, American forces bombed the temple because they suspected Japanese troops were storing military equipment inside. The bombing damage left visible marks that serve as reminders of that turbulent period.
