The museum opened in 2013 in the former Songshan Tobacco Factory, becoming the third Red Dot Design Museum after locations in Germany and Singapore. The industrial site links history with contemporary design practice.
The halls showcase rotating collections of contemporary product designs that reflect Taiwan's role in global design development. Visitors see how international and local designers shape objects for everyday use.

The interior was designed by Taiwanese designer Cheng Chung Yao and skillfully merges modern exhibition spaces with the industrial architecture of the former factory building. This integration shows how heritage structures can be repurposed for new functions.
