Former Taipei Railway Workshop, Railway museum in Xinyi District, Taipei, Taiwan.
The Former Taipei Railway Workshop is a preserved industrial complex in Xinyi District where locomotives and carriages were once serviced. The site includes repair halls with overhead cranes, transfer tracks with rotating platforms, and office buildings alongside social facilities for the workforce.
The workshop was built in 1935 under Japanese administration as the main site for servicing all trains on the island. After operations moved to Yangmei in 2012, the grounds stood empty until reopening as a railway heritage site.
Visitors today see the rare image of a complete repair operation with lathes, forges, and control panels standing just as they did on the final working day. The working rhythm of the past is visible in the workbenches and conveyor systems that prepared Taiwan's trains for decades of service.
Guided tours run on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:00 and 14:00 and must be booked in advance. The site is large, so visitors should allow at least two hours to see the halls and outdoor areas.
A preserved bathhouse from the 1930s supplied workers with hot water fed directly from the workshop's boiler systems. This room shows how industrial energy was also used for social facilities.
