Miniatures Museum of Taiwan, Miniature art museum in Zhongshan District, Taiwan
The Miniatures Museum of Taiwan is a museum in Zhongshan District, Taipei, devoted entirely to handcrafted miniature works built at a 1:12 scale. The collection brings together dollhouses, room boxes, and architectural models from several countries, each reproducing homes, streets, and interiors in reduced form.
The museum opened in 1997 as the first institution in Asia dedicated solely to miniatures. The practice of commissioning and collecting them goes back to 16th-century Europe, when wealthy patrons ordered finely crafted small objects for private display.
Many of the pieces on display come from Europe and North America, where collecting miniatures has long been an adult hobby rather than a children's pastime. Each tiny room is arranged with real furniture, lighting, and objects that reflect the domestic life of a specific place and time.
The museum is within walking distance of Zhongshan MRT station in central Taipei. Visiting in a small group or alone works best, as the displays reward slow looking and the space can feel crowded when tour groups arrive.
Some of the artists represented in the collection spent years, or even a lifetime, working on a single piece. The Rose Mansion, made by a British artist, is one such work and is recognized internationally for the level of care put into every room and object it contains.
