St Volodymyr's Cathedral

The Saint Volodymyr's Cathedral features seven golden domes rising 49 meters high, constructed from brick in the Neo-Byzantine architectural style during the 19th century.

Construction of the cathedral began in 1862 to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the baptism of Kievan Rus by Prince Vladimir, though financial issues delayed completion until 1882.

The interior walls showcase extensive murals created between 1885 and 1896 by notable artists including Viktor Vasnetsov, who painted the central nave with historical compositions.

The cathedral serves as the main church of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and houses important religious relics including the remains of Saint Barbara and Metropolitan Macarius.

The cathedral's artwork demonstrates a remarkable fusion of Eastern and Western artistic traditions through its monumental paintings, particularly evident in the 'Judgment of Pilate' composition.
