Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Research university in Kyiv, Ukraine.
Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv is a research university in Kyiv, Ukraine, housed in a red building designed in the Russian Classicism style. The campus includes fifteen faculties and five institutes spread across a central location in the city.
Tsar Nicholas I founded the institution in 1834 as Saint Vladimir Imperial University, and architect Vincent Beretti completed construction nine years later. After several name changes over the decades, it eventually received its current name in honor of the national poet.
The institution has carried the name of Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko since 1939, symbolizing the national identity of the country. Visitors can view the red-fronted main building, which now serves as a landmark of Ukrainian higher education.
The campus is centrally located in Kyiv and can be reached on foot, as several faculties stand near main roads. The buildings are accessible during daytime hours, with certain areas open to visitors depending on the academic calendar.
The botanical garden, in operation since 1839, spans more than five hectares and hosts plant collections from different climate zones. This green space serves both as a site for scientific work and as a place where students can acquire practical knowledge.
