Kiev National Picture Gallery, art museum in Kyiv, Ukraine
The Kyiv National Picture Gallery is an art museum housed in an 1880 mansion on Tereshchenkovska Street. The building contains over twelve thousand works, including icons from the 13th to 17th centuries, paintings, sculptures, graphic art, and decorative crafts from multiple periods.
The collection was founded in 1922 and drew from private works of the Tereshchenko family dating back to the 1870s. After multiple expansions, the institution became a national museum in 2013 and was renamed the Kyiv National Picture Gallery in 2017.
The gallery's name reflects its national importance for Ukraine. The rooms display how local artists created works within a historic mansion from the 19th century, preserving the original furnishings and decor throughout.
Visitors should come on weekdays to avoid crowds and have more time to appreciate the artworks. Check the museum website before your visit for current opening hours and temporary exhibitions.
The collection features works by renowned artists such as Ilia Repin and Mikhail Vrubel who were active while working in Russia. These artists combined Ukrainian roots with their international artistic careers.
