Henichesk, Port city in Kherson Oblast, Ukraine.
Henichesk is a port city in Kherson Oblast on the coast of the Sea of Azov in Ukraine. The city stretches along the narrow strip of land between the open sea and the shallow waters of the Syvash lagoon, forming a natural transition between both bodies of water.
Russian authorities established the settlement in 1784 after the incorporation of Crimea as a military outpost to secure the new southern frontier. The strategic position between sea and lagoon made the settlement an important point for control and trade in the region.
The name comes from the Turkish word for "new" and reflects the historical trade links between coast and steppe. Local markets today show the connection between fishing and farming through fresh produce from both areas.
The position between two bodies of water makes orientation easy for visitors walking either toward the beach or the port facilities. Wind from the sea can lower the perceived temperature noticeably throughout the year, so appropriate clothing is advisable.
The administration of the Azov-Syvash nature reserve operates from here and coordinates the protection of migratory birds and wetlands in the surrounding area. Visitors occasionally notice groups of birdwatchers with binoculars searching the shorelines for rare species.
