Henichesk Lighthouse, Maritime navigational structure in Henichesk, Ukraine.
The Henichesk Lighthouse is a maritime navigational structure at the mouth of the Utliutskyi Estuary, consisting of a two-story building with an attached tower standing approximately 18 meters high. The white structure transmits flashing light signals and is supported by a radio beacon to guide vessels through the Sea of Azov.
French specialists constructed the lighthouse during the 1870s over a period of five years, with operations delayed until 1883 due to the Russian-Turkish conflict. After its activation, it became crucial for improving maritime safety in the port city.
The lighthouse embodies the maritime traditions of Henichesk, where fishing vessels and merchant ships have long relied on coastal navigation. It reflects the port's role in the region's economic life.
The location at the river mouth makes it a landmark for orientation when approaching the harbor. Visitors should note that the building functions as an active navigation system and is not open for tours.
The lighthouse blends its original 19th-century architecture with modern navigation technology installed in two different phases. The radio beacon was added only in 1990, roughly a century after the light signal first began operation.
