Askaniia-Nova, Natural reserve in Kherson Oblast, Ukraine
The Askaniia-Nova reserve spans 33,000 hectares of steppe land, containing a zoological park, botanical gardens, and research facilities in southern Ukraine.
Friedrich Falz-Fein established the reserve in 1898, transforming former agricultural land into a sanctuary for both native steppe species and animals from other continents.
The reserve functions as a scientific research center where specialists study the preservation of rare plant species and the adaptation of foreign animals to local conditions.
Visitors can access guided tours through the virgin steppes and zoological park, with transportation available from the nearest major city of Kherson.
The reserve maintains the largest surviving area of virgin steppe in Europe, preserving natural grasslands that once covered vast territories from Hungary to China.
