Wild Fields, Historical region in southern Russia.

This territory covers broad grassland between the Dniester and Don rivers, stretching north of the Black Sea and the Azov Sea. The landscape consists of open steppes crossed by waterways that once drew different peoples to settle or move through.

Between the 16th and 18th centuries, the territory saw clashes between farming settlers and groups such as Scythians, Sarmatians, and Tatars who moved across the steppe. Later in the 18th century, the Russian Empire organized settlement campaigns that converted the grasslands into cultivated farmland.

The name refers to a frontier space where early Cossack settlements took root along the rivers. Their way of living shaped how this territory was viewed by neighboring powers for generations.

The territory contains several river systems and fertile soils that supported different ways of living over the centuries. Today traces of that past remain visible in the wide landscapes and riverbanks where those changes took place.

The plains shifted from thinly settled grassland to farming villages through organized settlement programs in the 18th century. This change altered how the land was used and brought new villages along the river valleys.
