Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, Ivano-Frankivsk, Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine.
The Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ is a brick church in Ivano-Frankivsk, western Ukraine, with three naves and two towers rising from its western facade. Inside, the spatial layout follows a three-nave plan, and the exterior walls show decorative work drawn from both Baroque and Classical traditions.
The church was built between 1752 and 1761 to replace an earlier Jesuit structure that had developed serious structural problems. After passing through several hands over the following centuries, it eventually became an Eastern Orthodox cathedral.
The cathedral serves as an active place of Orthodox worship, and visitors who arrive during a service can hear the chanted liturgy filling the nave. The interior retains a devotional character that feels very much alive rather than purely historical.
The cathedral is open to visitors outside of service times, so it is worth checking when worship takes place before planning a visit. Modest clothing is expected when entering, as it remains an active place of prayer.
The building was originally commissioned by the Jesuits, yet the order was suppressed just a few decades after the church was completed, before they could make long use of it. This means the cathedral spent most of its life serving communities very different from those who built it.
