Taras Shevchenko Arboretum, Ivano-Frankivsk, Municipal park in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine.
Taras Shevchenko Arboretum is a public tree park in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine, holding a large collection of tree species from many parts of the world. Laid-out pathways connect the different sections, and information signs help visitors identify the trees as they walk through.
The arboretum was founded in 1896, when Ivano-Frankivsk was still part of the Austro-Hungarian province of Galicia, making it one of the city's first planned green spaces. Over the course of the 20th century, new species were added and the collection grew.
The park carries the name of the Ukrainian national poet Taras Shevchenko, which gives it a special place in the city's public life. Visitors can find labels on many trees showing their scientific names, so a walk through the grounds also feels like a quiet lesson in botany.
The park has several entry points and is easy to walk through on foot, as the paths are flat and well-kept. A visit in the morning or late afternoon tends to be more pleasant, when fewer people are around.
Some of the trees in the park came from historical nurseries in Poland, France, and America and were planted as far back as the late 19th century. These living traces of old trade routes between Europe and overseas grow side by side today, though most visitors never notice their origins.
