Svitlodarsk, Industrial city in Bakhmut Raion, Ukraine
Svitlodarsk is a city in eastern Ukraine situated at an elevation of 181 meters and spanning approximately 2 square kilometers. It developed as an industrial settlement centered around a major power generation facility that shaped its growth and structure.
The city emerged in 1968 as a residential settlement for workers at the Vuhlehirska power station and received official city status in 1992. This marked its transition from a company town focused on industrial workers to a formally recognized municipality.
The 2001 census recorded a population mix of 60 percent ethnic Ukrainians and 37 percent ethnic Russians, with Russian as the primary language.
The city sits approximately 24 kilometers southeast of Bakhmut and about 58 kilometers northwest of Donetsk, maintaining connections to major regional transport routes. Visitors should check current conditions beforehand, as proximity to conflict zones may affect accessibility and travel planning.
The population declined from around 12,000 to several thousand residents after 2014 due to the city's position near a conflict frontline. This dramatic shift in population reflects the profound impact of military events on daily life and urban conditions.
