Olyka Castle

Olyka Castle is a Renaissance fortress with a rectangular layout and central courtyard, topped by a two-story clock tower featuring baroque details. The site now functions as a museum venue where visitors can walk through period halls and learn about the building's role in regional history.

Prince Mikolaj Radziwill commissioned this fortified residence in 1564, making it the primary seat of the Radziwill family in Volhynia. When Swedish forces attacked in 1702, the fortress walls held firm while the surrounding village suffered considerable destruction.

The castle displays Renaissance military design with square bastions that became models for later fortifications in the region. This building approach still shapes how visitors experience the site today.

The castle welcomes visitors after substantial restoration work and operates as part of the Volyn museum network. Dress appropriately for changing weather to fully enjoy exploring both the interior halls and outdoor grounds.

During the 1702 Swedish invasion, the fortress demonstrated its defensive strength by remaining largely intact while the surrounding village was devastated. This contrast reveals how well the fortifications worked against the siege tactics of that era.
