Klevan Castle, Medieval castle in Klevan, Ukraine
Klevan Castle is a medieval fortress in Ukraine with two remaining defense towers, three fortified buildings, and a distinctive four-arched bridge at its entrance. The layout reflects a structure designed to command a river crossing and control movement through the valley.
Prince Michael Czartoryski built the castle in the middle of the 15th century to control a key river crossing of the Stubla. It served as a defensive stronghold for the region for centuries until its military purpose faded.
When Jesuits arrived in the 17th century, they transformed the fortress into a school, shifting its purpose from military defense to education and shaping the region's cultural life. This change brought new energy to the site and its surroundings.
You can walk around the ruins fairly easily to see the towers and buildings from various angles and understand the fortress layout. Wear sturdy shoes since the ground is uneven and some sections are under restoration or require careful movement.
The western tower held a stone bastion for defensive strength while the eastern tower functioned as an arsenal for weapons and supplies. This division shows how thoughtfully the fortress was designed for its dual military purpose.
