Rivne Raion, Administrative district in Western Ukraine.
Rivne Raion is an administrative district in Rivne Oblast, in northwestern Ukraine, covering the city of Rivne and a wide range of surrounding villages and smaller settlements. The territory is mostly flat, with patches of forest and farmland stretching across the area.
The district was formed in 1940 during Soviet administrative reorganization and went through several boundary changes over the following decades. In 2020, a nationwide Ukrainian reform significantly enlarged it by merging it with neighboring units.
The name Rivne likely comes from a Slavic word meaning flat or level, which fits the gently rolling terrain that visitors notice across much of the area. Local markets and village gatherings still follow patterns tied to the agricultural calendar, giving the district a rhythm rooted in rural life.
The city of Rivne is the best base for visiting the district, as it holds the main administrative offices, transport connections, and services. Those planning to explore the rural parts should have their own transport, since public connections to many villages are limited.
The ground beneath parts of the district holds notable amber deposits, and unauthorized amber extraction has been a visible issue in the area for years. In some forested spots, the disturbed soil left by this activity is still noticeable, hinting at what lies beneath an otherwise ordinary-looking landscape.
