Hirnyk, Rural settlement in Chervonohrad, Ukraine
Hirnyk is a settlement within Chervonohrad Municipality in Lviv Oblast, western Ukraine. It is made up mostly of residential buildings typical of Soviet-era construction, set on gently elevated ground on the edge of Chervonohrad.
Hirnyk received the status of an urban-type settlement in 1954, at a time when coal mining was expanding across the Chervonohrad area. In January 2024, it was reclassified as a rural settlement as part of broader administrative reforms across Ukraine.
Hirnyk sits close to Chervonohrad and residents rely on the larger town for shops, schools, and services. The ties to Lviv Oblast traditions are part of everyday life here, visible in local celebrations and the Ukrainian language heard on every street.
Hirnyk is easy to reach from Chervonohrad by local roads, as the two are very close together. Visitors looking for shops, health services, or other everyday facilities will find them more readily in the center of Chervonohrad.
The name Hirnyk means "miner" in Ukrainian, a direct reference to the coal mining past that shaped the whole Chervonohrad area. The mines that once drove growth in this part of Lviv Oblast have since closed, leaving settlements like this one to find a new footing.
