Melitopol Museum

Melitopol Museum occupies a former mansion with richly decorated interiors from the nineteenth century and holds approximately 60,000 objects. The collection spans archaeological finds, ethnographic artifacts, numismatic items, and crafted works representing various periods of regional history.

The institution began around 1900 with a collection of taxidermied birds and developed into a formal regional museum that officially opened in 1921. The collection later expanded to include archaeological finds and ethnographic materials documenting the area's deep past.

The museum houses Scythian gold from the fourth century BC and a nineteenth-century carved Doukhobor Memorial Stone that reflect the diverse cultures that shaped this region over millennia. These objects tell stories of peoples who left their mark on the local landscape.

The museum is located in the city and is best reached by local transport or on foot, with advance booking required for entry. It is advisable to contact ahead to confirm opening hours and arrange a visit.

The numismatic collection contains coins, orders, medals, tokens, and banknotes discovered during archaeological excavations throughout the region. These items allow visitors to grasp the history of local trade routes and currency traditions directly.
