Novhorod-Siverskyi Fortress

Novhorod-Siverskyi Fortress is a stone fortification built on a high hill above the Desna River, featuring defensive walls and towers from different historical periods. The site contains several structures that reveal how military design evolved across centuries.

The fortress was founded in the 11th century and served as a key defense point for the Siverian principality. In 1708, the site witnessed an important meeting between Hetman Mazepa and King Karl XII.

The fortress houses the Assumption Cathedral built in 1671, displaying Ukrainian baroque style with distinctive domes and ornate details. These religious structures reveal how important this place was to the community's spiritual life.

The fortress is open daily to visitors, with guided tours available at the visitor center near the main entrance. Wear comfortable shoes since the site is built on a hill and walking through the structures involves climbing stairs.

This location inspired The Tale of Igor's Campaign, a medieval epic that describes Prince Igor's military expedition against the Polovtsy in 1185. This literary connection ties the fortress to important moments in Eastern European cultural history.
