Shostka Raion, Administrative district in Sumy Oblast, Ukraine
Shostka Raion is an administrative district in the northern part of Sumy Oblast, in northeastern Ukraine. It covers a range of towns, villages, and rural communities, all organized around the city of Shostka as the central hub.
The district as it exists today was created in 2020 as part of a national administrative reform that reduced the number of districts across Sumy Oblast. Several older administrative units were merged to form the current territory.
Shostka, the main city of the district, has a working-class character shaped by its industrial past. The surrounding villages follow a slower pace tied to farming and small local markets.
Anyone traveling through the district should keep in mind that services and road conditions can vary from one community to the next. The city of Shostka is the best starting point, as it has the most reliable services and connections in the area.
The city of Shostka was once home to one of the largest factories producing cinema film and photographic materials in the Soviet Union, known as Svema. Film rolls and photo paper made there were used by photographers and filmmakers across the country.
