Staryi Krym, Urban settlement near Mariupol, Ukraine.
Staryi Krym is a settlement in the Mariupol urban hromada in the Donetsk region of Ukraine. Its local economy has traditionally relied on reinforced concrete manufacturing, shoe production, and furniture making.
The settlement was founded around 1780 and passed through several administrative arrangements over the following centuries. In July 2020, it was formally incorporated into the Mariupol urban hromada.
The settlement mixes urban habits with rural ones, and this is visible in the way the streets look: small gardens next to residential buildings, workshops near housing blocks. The pace of daily life here feels closer to a village than to a city, even if the place has long held an urban designation.
The terrain is flat, which makes it easy to move around on foot or by car. Visiting during daylight hours is advisable, as it helps with orientation in an area that has limited landmarks.
The name Staryi Krym means 'Old Crimea' in Ukrainian, even though this settlement is far from the Crimean peninsula. The name likely reflects the origin of early settlers who came from that region.
