Kherson Art Museum, Art museum in Kherson, Ukraine
Kherson Art Museum holds more than 13,000 paintings, sculptures and graphic works from Ukraine and abroad, housed in a former town hall. The rooms spread across several floors, with the permanent display organized by period and genre.
The institution was founded in 1978 when the art department of the local history museum merged with a collection brought from Leningrad. Over the following decades, the holdings grew through acquisitions and donations.
The collection highlights works by artists from southern Ukraine, showing how local painters developed their own approach to landscape and portraiture. Temporary exhibitions bring contemporary artists into dialogue with older pieces, creating a living connection across generations.
The exhibition rooms are located in a multi-story building, with some areas reached by stairs. Guided visits can be requested in advance and are tailored to visitor interests.
Two 16th-century icons form a highlight of the religious collection: one depicting Saint George with the apostles Peter and Paul, and another showing the Virgin Mary. These panels originally came from a monastery in the region and reflect the Byzantine tradition in Ukrainian icon painting.
