Kherson

Kherson is a port city in southern Ukraine positioned where the Dnieper River meets the Black Sea. Large shipyards and maritime facilities line the right bank, shaping the character of the waterfront.

Catherine II founded the settlement in 1778 as a fortress and shipyard under General Ivan Hannibal to expand naval power. Over the following centuries, it grew into a major trading center along the Black Sea coast.

Two theaters and a philharmonic orchestra present regular performances that reflect Ukrainian traditions, while several museums offer insight into local heritage. The community gathers for festivals and public events that keep traditional music and customs alive in everyday life.

Winters bring cold weather while summers reach 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), so spring or autumn offer more comfortable conditions. The mostly flat terrain makes walking or cycling an easy way to explore the waterfront and surrounding streets.

The position along the river made it a key point during military conflicts, most recently in 2022. It returned to Ukrainian control in November that year, highlighting its continued importance in the region.
