Berezan Island, Archaeological islet in Mykolaiv Oblast, Ukraine.
Berezan Island is an archaeological islet at the mouth of the Dnieper River where it meets the Black Sea coast, measuring about 850 meters long and up to 850 meters wide at its widest point. The uninhabited islet sits between the mainland and open water, positioned where an ancient trading port once thrived.
The first Greek settlement on the northern Black Sea coast was founded here in the 6th century BC under the name Borysthen. Later the island became strategically important and underwent various phases under different rulers before becoming a site of archaeological study.
The name comes from an ancient Greek settlement that existed here over 2,500 years ago. Today, ongoing excavations reveal how Greeks and local peoples interacted through trade and exchange in this strategically located harbor.
The island lies about eight kilometers from Ochakiv and can only be reached by boat. Visitors should arrange transport with a local boat operator and be prepared for basic conditions since there are no facilities on site.
Underground munitions storage was built on this abandoned islet during the Cold War to make it a military outpost. These facilities show how the island shifted its role from ancient harbor to modern defensive position.
