Mykolaiv Oblast, Administrative division in southern Ukraine.
Mykolaiv Oblast is a region in southern Ukraine that stretches between the Dnipro River and the Black Sea. The landscape consists of flat farmland crossed by several waterways and slopes gently toward the coast.
The area was part of the Greek colonization of the Black Sea during antiquity and later developed into an important shipbuilding center. The modern administrative structure emerged after World War II in 1937.
Education centers, including Admiral Makarov National University of Shipbuilding and Petro Mohyla Black Sea State University, strengthen the maritime expertise of the region.
Several bridges cross the rivers and connect the main cities within the region. The roads run from north to south and eventually reach the port towns along the coast.
The waters off the coast contain remains of ancient trade routes that connected the entire Black Sea area. Archaeologists continue to discover amphorae and other artifacts from different eras.
