Cherkasy Castle, Medieval wooden castle in Cherkasy, Ukraine
Cherkasy Castle was a fortification built from oak and pine logs with earth-filled walls that stretched along the Dnieper riverbank. The structure contained living quarters, a church, guest rooms, and four corner towers equipped with locally made artillery.
The castle was founded in 1392 to protect the settlement against attacks from the Golden Horde. It was reinforced in 1549 and remained a key defensive position against Turkish and Tatar raids into the 17th century.
The fortress served as more than just a military post; it was the administrative heart of the region where local affairs were managed. People gathered here for important civic events and ceremonies that shaped community life.
The site is located today on Bohdan Khmelnytsky Square on Castle Hill with pathways, lighting, and benches for visitors. You can walk around the area to explore the grounds and view the commemorative monuments marking its past.
The fortress was surrounded by a wide moat that served as an additional defensive line to prevent attackers from approaching easily. Inside the walls were practical facilities like barns and stables that supported daily operations and supplies.
