Vatersay, Scottish island in Western Isles, United Kingdom

Vatersay consists of two rocky landmasses connected by a sandy isthmus, with wide white sand beaches on the eastern and western coasts. The island has rolling terrain with low vegetation and open views across the water in all directions.

The island was purchased in 1909 by the Congested Districts Board and divided into 58 crofts for local inhabitants. This action was part of a broader effort to stabilize and develop rural communities in Scotland.

The name comes from Old Norse and refers to the island's geographical shape. Today visitors can see how the small community has adapted to the harsh climate through their homes and the way they use the land.

A 250-meter causeway has connected the island to Barra since 1991, providing permanent access to services and facilities. Visitors should know that weather can change quickly, so appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear are important.

A monument on West Beach remembers 350 people who died in 1853 when their emigrant ship wrecked offshore. This site tells the tragic story of migration and stands as a quiet reminder of a nearly forgotten disaster.
