Hillsborough Stadium, Football stadium in Owlerton, Sheffield, United Kingdom
Hillsborough Stadium is a football ground in Owlerton on the northern edge of Sheffield with four stands seating just under forty thousand spectators. The pitch is a hybrid surface combining natural grass with synthetic fibers to improve durability.
The ground opened in September 1899 with a match against Chesterfield when Herbert Munday scored the first goal. Over the decades the stadium underwent several rebuilding phases including expansion of the stands after the Second World War.
The name Spion Kop comes from the Boer War and refers to the north terrace where fans gather to chant during home matches. Many supporters wear blue-and-white scarves and meet in the surrounding streets before kickoff.
Several bus routes and a tram line connect the ground to the center of Sheffield in around twenty minutes travel time. Wheelchair areas are located in all stands and food kiosks open before matches begin.
The record attendance of over seventy-two thousand spectators occurred in 1934 during an FA Cup match between Wednesday and Manchester City. At that time regulations still allowed standing areas on open terraces which is why so many people could fit inside.
