Queen Mary University of London, Public research university in Mile End, East London, England
Queen Mary University of London is a public research university in the Mile End area, east of central London. The main site includes lecture halls, libraries, laboratories and residence halls spread across several adjoining buildings and green spaces.
The university formed in 1989 through the merger of several older institutions, including two medical schools and two colleges founded in the 19th century. It gained its current status within the University of London in 2013.
The campus sits in a part of London where more than 300 languages are spoken and shops, markets and places of worship reflect communities from around the world. Students and staff work in this multicultural setting, which shapes daily life around the university.
The site is best explored on foot, as buildings are close together and linked by pedestrian paths. Visitors should note that many areas are accessible only to enrolled students or registered guests.
The library holds a collection of rare books and manuscripts, including medieval texts and early printed works. Some of these items are displayed in exhibition cases and can be viewed during special tours.
