Dartmouth College, Private research university in Hanover, United States
Dartmouth College is a private research university in Hanover that spreads across a terrace above the Connecticut River, surrounded by dense tree groves. Brick buildings in Georgian colonial style form a closed ensemble around open lawns, while newer structures of glass and concrete stand at the edges of the grounds.
The institution was founded in 1769 by Eleazar Wheelock with the goal of offering education to native populations and European settlers. In the early 1800s, a legal conflict with the government of New Hampshire led the Supreme Court to affirm the autonomy of private colleges in America.
Students gather regularly around a large bonfire on the central green, a tradition that shapes community life on campus. During the fall months, paths between buildings fill with visitors and residents who come to see the colors of the trees.
The grounds are best explored on foot, with main paths between academic buildings clearly marked and crossable in about 15 minutes. Visitors should keep in mind that during winter, snow covers the paths and may make orientation between buildings more difficult.
The campus uses a quarter system instead of the usual semester structure, which allows students to take courses throughout the entire year. This division means that groups leave or return to the grounds at all times of the year, creating a different dynamic than at other universities.
