Ivy Mike, Nuclear test site at Enewetak Atoll, Marshall Islands
Ivy Mike was the first full-scale thermonuclear device test conducted by the United States on Enewetak Atoll in the Marshall Islands. The explosion left a massive underwater crater where Elugelab Island once stood.
The test took place on November 1, 1952, marking a major turning point in nuclear technology development. It demonstrated the full power of thermonuclear design for the first time in an actual detonation.
The scientific advances from this test led to the discovery of new elements, including einsteinium and fermium, contributing to nuclear physics research.
The site is not accessible to visitors as it remains part of a military testing area. The atoll was evacuated after the series of nuclear tests and remains restricted under security protocols.
Elugelab Island was completely vaporized by the explosion and no longer exists today. The mushroom cloud from the detonation rose to about 41 kilometers above the Pacific Ocean.
