Lake Winnipesaukee, Freshwater lake in New Hampshire, United States.

Lake Winnipesaukee is a freshwater body in central New Hampshire with over 270 islands and depths reaching up to 55 meters (180 feet). The shoreline extends for many kilometers and includes coves, peninsulas, and small beaches along forested slopes.

The Abenaki established fishing settlements here before European settlers reached the shores in the 18th century. The lake developed into a recreation area during the 19th century with early steamboat lines and summer cottages.

The name comes from the Abenaki language and refers to the water's position among the hills. Visitors today see the same coves and inlets that once served as fishing grounds for Indigenous communities.

Several public beaches and boat ramps provide access to the water, especially during summer when the weather is warm. During winter months the surface partially freezes and allows activities like ice fishing in certain areas.

A boat named Sophie C. delivers mail to island residents during summer months and has run this route since 1892. Visitors can board and watch letters and packages handed over directly at the docks.
