The county formed in 1824 from Edwards County following tensions between Albion and Mount Carmel over the location of the county seat.
The region contains Beall Woods State Park, preserving 329 acres of original Eastern Woodlands ecosystem with native plant and animal species.
Mount Carmel serves as the county seat, providing governmental services and administrative functions for the 11,190 residents recorded in 2020.
The area experienced one of Illinois's largest earthquakes on April 18, 2008, with its epicenter located in Lick Prairie Township.
