Stephenson County extends across 565 square miles of land with rolling hills, rivers, and agricultural fields in the northwest region of Illinois.
The county formed in 1837 from portions of Jo Daviess and Winnebago counties, receiving its name from Colonel Benjamin Stephenson, an Illinois representative.
Multiple schools, including Freeport High School and Lena-Winslow High School, provide education to students throughout the county's different communities.
The county seat of Freeport contains administrative offices, governmental departments, and public services for the 44,630 residents recorded in 2020.
Kellogg's Grove stands as a preserved historical site within the county borders, marking territorial conflicts from the early settlement period.
