Anderson, County seat in Madison County, Indiana, United States.
Anderson is a city in central Indiana along the White River, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) northeast of Indianapolis. The town spreads across several residential neighborhoods with early 20th-century wooden homes and older brick buildings that once housed factories.
The town grew in the 1880s when natural gas deposits were discovered and factories moved in. Later, major automotive manufacturers built plants that provided thousands of jobs until the 1970s.
The Paramount Theatre from the late 1920s now serves as the main venue for orchestra concerts and film screenings in town. The Art Deco façade reflects the era when automotive plants and factories brought thousands of workers into the region.
The downtown area lies within walking distance of the train depot and several public bus stops. Most shops and office buildings cluster along Meridian Street and the surrounding blocks.
The White River flows through town and forms small river islands where great blue herons and other water birds nest. These islands sit right next to old red brick factory buildings that now serve other purposes.
