Gloucester County, County seat in New Jersey, US
Gloucester County is an administrative district in southern New Jersey, reachable from Philadelphia across the Delaware River. County government operates from Woodbury, where the courthouse and offices are located.
Henry Wood founded Woodbury in 1683 after leaving northwest England for religious reasons. The settlement later grew into the administrative seat for the entire region.
About a dozen protected structures stand along Broad Street and give the old town a traditional courthouse district character. Residents and visitors can walk along this street and see preserved architecture from several centuries.
Most public buildings sit near the courthouse in central Woodbury. Several schools covering different grade levels are also spread across town.
Woodbury introduced mandatory recycling in 1980 as the first city in the United States to do so. The decision later became a model for other communities across the country.
