LaGrange, human settlement in Dutchess County, New York, United States of America
LaGrange is a town in Dutchess County, New York, covering about 40 square miles in the central mid-Hudson Valley region. The landscape shifts from densely built residential neighborhoods on the west side of the Taconic Parkway to more natural, less developed areas to the east and north with fields, farmland, and woodland.
The town was established in the early 1800s and was originally named Freedom because it was carved from a larger territory. The name was later changed to LaGrange in honor of the estate of French leader the Marquis de Lafayette.
LaGrangeville serves as the town's main hub where residents gather at local shops and cafes that reflect everyday small-town life. The community celebrates together through summer barbecues and holiday festivals in parks and gathering spaces.
The Taconic State Parkway and NYS Route 55 run through the town, connecting it to nearby communities and New York City about 70 miles south. Freedom Park offers a swimming area with lifeguards, playgrounds, and a stage where seasonal events take place, providing accessible gathering spaces for residents and visitors.
The town bears the name of a French revolutionary leader's estate, reflecting an uncommon historical tie to Europe from its early foundation. The original name Freedom came from Freedom Park, the recreational heart of the town where generations of families have gathered for swimming and summer activities.
