University of Denver, Private university in Denver, United States
The University of Denver is a private research university south of downtown Denver in Colorado. The grounds consist of academic buildings, dormitories, and sports facilities spread across a large area with trees and green spaces.
The Methodist Church founded this college in 1864 when Colorado was still a territory and more than a decade before statehood. The institution grew substantially in the early 20th century and expanded its research divisions after World War Two.
The campus includes buildings from several eras of American college architecture, ranging from neo-Gothic towers to modern glass facades. Students and visitors often see groups sitting on the lawns between lecture halls or using the wide walkways that connect all major areas.
Visitors can walk through the publicly accessible areas of the campus, with most paths flat and well marked. Parking is available at several locations around the perimeter, from which central buildings can be reached within a few minutes.
The Lamont School of Music building houses a concert hall with a historic organ that is played regularly during public performances. A separate mountain location west of the city serves as an outdoor laboratory for environmental studies and provides overnight facilities for multi-day programs.
