Ashburn, Census-designated place in Loudoun County, Virginia.
Ashburn is a populated area in Loudoun County, Virginia, located roughly 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Washington, D.C. The area extends across residential neighborhoods connected by State Routes 7 and 28.
The area began as Farmwell plantation in 1802, part of a land holding by George Lee III. The name Ashburn was later adopted officially as the settlement grew and developed.
The Ashburn Presbyterian Church, originally built in 1873, still stands as an active congregation at its historic location. The Broad Run Bridge in stone still spans the creek today and shows craftsmanship from the 19th century.
Two Washington Metro Silver Line stations, Loudoun Gateway and Ashburn Station, connect the area directly to the capital region. Most locations are spread out, so a car helps for moving between different points.
The region houses many data centers for major technology companies and is known as Data Center Alley within the Dulles Technology Corridor. These facilities process a substantial portion of global internet traffic, though they look plain from the outside.
