Union City, Urban center in Hudson County, New Jersey, US
Union City is a municipality occupying the northern section of Hudson County near the Hudson River. The urban layout combines residential blocks with commercial corridors, and higher elevations offer views across the waterway toward Manhattan.
The municipality came into being on June 1, 1925, when Union Hill and West Hoboken Township merged into a single administrative entity. This reorganization pooled resources and simplified local government for both previously separate settlements.
The name reflects the merger that brought two former municipalities together into one administrative unit. Latin American traditions shape everyday life throughout the neighborhoods, visible in storefronts, restaurants, and street culture.
The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail and several bus routes link the area to surrounding towns and Manhattan. Sidewalks run through different neighborhoods, allowing visitors to reach shops and restaurants on foot.
In earlier decades, the area developed into a center for embroidery manufacturing and attracted skilled workers from Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Austria. This craft tradition shaped the local economy for many years and left traces in the architecture of old workshop buildings.
