Livingston, Residential township in Essex County, United States
Livingston is a township in Essex County, New Jersey, covering an area with residential neighborhoods, commercial streets, and parks. Streets run between wooded lots and public facilities spread throughout the township.
The township was established in 1813 by the New Jersey Legislature and named after the state's first governor. During the 20th century, the originally rural area developed into a residential community within reach of Newark.
The community takes its name from William Livingston, New Jersey's first governor after independence. Today it functions mainly as a residential area where families live in single-family houses and use public green spaces for walks and outdoor sports.
Bus lines connect the township regularly with Newark, Manhattan, and other locations in New Jersey. Many facilities and shops are located along main roads that can be easily reached by car or bus.
The Riker Hill Complex serves as an arts park where studio artists create and exhibit their works. Visitors can tour the workspaces and watch artists at work or view finished pieces.
