South Mountain Recreation Complex

South Mountain Recreation Complex is a 36-acre recreation facility in West Orange that includes walking paths, animal exhibits, and various sports amenities. The location features an ice skating arena, a reservoir for paddle boats, and a miniature golf course with animal sculptures.

The facility came into focus in 2010 when Essex County implemented a redevelopment plan that expanded the area around Richard J Codey Arena. This development created new recreation spaces within an existing park.

The zoo within the complex draws visitors who observe animals in replicated habitats and participate in educational programs. The facility serves as an important place for conservation and environmental education in the region.

Visitors can find parking near the various facilities and choose between ice skating, miniature golf, and boating on the reservoir. The paths are fully accessible and the facilities are open during regular hours, though the season affects which activities are available.

The 19-hole miniature golf course draws visitors who play among oversized animal sculptures depicting an African savanna setting. This creative design combines sport with a nature theme in a playful way.
