The South Mountain Recreation Complex spans 36 acres within South Mountain Reservation, featuring multiple recreational facilities, walking paths, and animal exhibits.
The complex expanded in 2010 through a county redevelopment plan that transformed the area near Richard J Codey Arena into additional recreational spaces.
The Essex County Turtle Back Zoo within the complex receives more than 500,000 annual visitors who experience diverse animal habitats and educational programs.
Visitors access various activities including ice skating at the arena, miniature golf with animal sculptures, paddle boats on Orange Reservoir, and forest adventures.
The complex includes a 19-hole miniature golf course where players navigate through life-sized African animal sculptures while putting their way around the course.
