Riker Hill Fossil Site

Riker Hill Fossil Site is a protected area in Essex County that preserves ancient tracks from dinosaurs, animals, and insects embedded in sedimentary rock across roughly 16 acres. Red stone layers show ripple patterns and mud cracks interrupted by a striking basalt wall formed from cooled volcanic material.

The site was once a working quarry until two teenagers discovered more than 1,000 preserved tracks in 1968. This discovery led to its protection as a natural landmark.

The fossil site forms part of a larger complex including Riker Hill Art Park and Becker Park, offering educational opportunities for schools.

The site is accessible during daylight hours via marked trails located near Interstate 280 for easy access. Visitors should follow preservation guidelines to protect the fragile fossil displays.

The rock bed displays clear ripple marks and dried mud cracks that show how water once moved across the ancient ground. These surface patterns reveal details about the ecosystem from millions of years ago.
