River Grove is a small village in Cook County, Illinois, situated about 11 miles west of downtown Chicago. The 2-square-mile community features single-family homes, tree-lined streets, and roughly half its land preserved as open spaces and natural areas.
The area was originally home to the Potawatomi people before European settlement began in the early 1800s. A key river crossing in the 1830s became an important route between Chicago and Galena, spurring community development around what would become River Grove.
The name River Grove comes from the Des Plaines River and groves of ash trees that line its shores. These trees held special meaning for early German and Nordic settlers who found them reminiscent of the forests they had left behind.
