Gettysburg is a borough in Adams County in southern Pennsylvania, close to the Maryland border. Streets run through rolling terrain connecting residential neighborhoods with open fields where fighting took place in the 19th century.
A three-day battle took place here in July 1863 that left more than 50,000 dead and wounded. President Lincoln delivered a brief speech months later at the dedication of the soldiers' cemetery.
The cemetery draws visitors from across the country who come to reflect on the cost of the conflict in a quiet setting. Monuments and markers throughout the area identify the units that fought here and where they came from.
The visitor center on the edge of town offers introductions to the events and maps of the main sites. Walking routes lead through preserved positions and across fields that are mostly open to the public today.
A farm on the edge of town served as President Eisenhower's retreat and meeting place for visiting heads of state. The property includes the main house and several outbuildings on roughly 230 acres (93 hectares).
