Atomic City, Small administrative division in southeastern Idaho, United States.
Atomic City is a small settlement in southeastern Idaho located near the Idaho National Laboratory at a higher elevation. The town occupies a very compact area with a handful of buildings and basic commercial facilities.
The settlement was originally called Midway before being renamed in 1950 following the opening of a nearby nuclear research facility. This name change connected the town to the growth of the nuclear energy industry in the region.
The town hosts a summer stock car racing event that brings residents together each year. This gathering reflects how the tight-knit community maintains its local traditions and social bonds.
The town has very limited services on site, so visitors should plan ahead for supplies and meals. The nearest larger town with full services is about an hour away and makes advance preparation practical.
Every adult resident has completed high school, which is unusually high for such a small isolated place. Yet remarkably, no resident holds a four-year college degree, revealing an interesting pattern in how education works in this community.
