Brighton Beach, Coastal neighborhood in Brooklyn, United States.

Brighton Beach is a coastal neighborhood in Brooklyn stretching along the Atlantic Ocean with a wide sandy beach and a wooden boardwalk. Streets inland run parallel to the shore, lined with multistory residential buildings and shops beneath an elevated subway line.

William Engeman established the area as a seaside resort in 1868, naming it after the English coastal city in 1878. During the 20th century, waves of immigrants from the former Soviet Union arrived and shaped the current identity of the neighborhood.

The area maintains a strong Russian-speaking community with shops, restaurants, and cafés offering Eastern European food and goods. Street signs often appear in two languages, and on weekends markets fill with families shopping and talking together.

Subway lines B and Q serve multiple stations in the neighborhood, offering direct connections to Manhattan and other parts of Brooklyn. The beach remains busiest during summer, while shops and restaurants stay open year-round.

St. Petersburg Bookstore holds the largest collection of Russian literature for sale outside Russia, with titles for all ages. Many older residents prefer to sit on benches along the boardwalk playing dominoes or chess.
