Luna Park, Amusement park in Coney Island, Brooklyn, United States
Luna Park is an amusement park in Coney Island, a neighborhood on the southern shore of Brooklyn facing the Atlantic Ocean. The site includes several roller coasters, carousels, and rides for children and adults, spread along the boardwalk and adjoining plots.
The original park opened in 1903 and turned Coney Island into one of the most famous entertainment spots on the East Coast. The current site reopened in 2010, building on the legacy of the old park even though the rides and facilities are new.
The name recalls the original park that once defined Coney Island as a resort. Today, families from Brooklyn gather here on summer days, walking between the attractions and lining up at the food stands along the boardwalk.
The park is accessible through several entrances along Surf Avenue and the Boardwalk. On summer weekends, expect longer waits at the gates and for the most popular rides.
The Thunderbolt reaches speeds around 89 kilometers per hour (55 miles per hour) over a track spanning roughly 610 meters (2,000 feet). The ride loops several times and drops close to the boardwalk, giving passengers an open view of the ocean.
